Hosted an Open Day on Saturday May 16th 2009
The day was a fantastic success, and many thanks to all who supported the event. We are planning our next one, so watch this space..!
Guests who attended the day comprised mainly of keen rifle shots, however the event also attracted those wishing to browse the latest range of technical and lifestyle clothing. Guests including Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen.
Representatives from Sauer and Savage (Garlands), Ruger and Merkel (Viking Arms), Tikka and Sako (GMK), and Swarovski (Swarovski UK) all came to offer technical expertise and exhibit their latest models. The Cotswold Shooting Company went to every effort to display a range of rifles, from the modest Savage .17 HMR through to the mighty 416 Magnum M77 Ruger, to suit all types of stalking.
Steve Bowers, one of the Country’s leading rifle makers, was also on site all-day answering questions on the various merits of different calibres and ammunition for all types of deer stalking in the UK. He also brought along a selection of Roe Buck trophy heads to demonstrate how they vary from one county to the next. Steve was also keen to promote the BDS Level 1 course that he delivers at the Royal Agricultural College, explaining the benefits of being able to ‘humanely manage Deer populations’. Steve commented that he was ‘delighted to see that the event hosted by Cotswold Shooting Company had generated so much interest in stalking’.
One of the highlights of the day must have been the butchery demonstration which was presented by Jonathan Richardson, one of the Cotswolds leading chefs. Starting with a freshly shot Roe Buck carcass, he instructed the audience on the best methods to obtain all the various cuts, from the neck to the saddle. Jonathan then switched from butcher to head chef as he proceeded to demonstrate interesting and tasty ways to cook venison which guests were invited to sample. Recipes included ‘Redcurrant & Sage Venison Haunch Steak’, and ‘Venison, Bourbon & Chocolate Chilli with Sweetcorn Muffins’. If you would like any of the recipes from the day please contact us at go@go-country.co.uk and we will be happy to forward you a copy of them.
Enthusiasm was also generated by two competitions running throughout the day. A free prize draw to win a Bushnell 3-9 x 40 Telescopic Sight (RRP- £109.99) was won by Martin Lafford, and Felix Bihlmeier from Newnham on Severn was delighted to win a guided stalk with his guesstimate weight of 34lbs for the Roe Buck carcass which tipped the scales at 35.75lbs.

“Saturday at Peter and Sally Tupper’s was a superb way to spend a couple of hours with the kids giving them a real taste of what true country life and sports is about. Being able to handle an excellent range of sporting rifles and shotguns as well as air rifles with experts giving good basic advice was spot on. My young lads loved it and I can now see myself purchasing a new rimfire and centrefire rifle from the high quality selection I was able to handle on the day. A lovely educational and relaxing time topped off by the most deliciously cooked venison on the premises- I ate 4 tasty venison baps so that was lunch done and the kids had 2 each before handling the sort of rifles and bullets that brought the venison to the table from their local countryside. One of the boys asked if we can go back to Peters every Saturday for lunch and look at his guns- I think he's onto a winner! ”.

“I just wanted to pass on my thanks and congratulations on your organisation of the Stalkers Day last Saturday. It really was an excellent day! I learned a lot from the butchery demonstration, and the resulting cooking will hopefully attract a lot more people to eat venison! It was also good to see the representatives from Viking Arms, GMK, Swarovski, Specialist Rifle Services and others - how did you manage to get them all in one place at the same time? It was also so kind of you to have tea, coffee and other refreshments available during the day. We stalkers are, by nature, a solitary breed, but you did a great job in making us sociable for a day! I do hope that it was successful for you - certainly it is unlikely that I would have ventured to Cirencester otherwise, but I will be sure to visit you again.”
Many thanks again for all your efforts.

“Just a short note to thank everyone for a great day on Saturday.
Myself & my colleagues who attended had a very enjoyable time, we found the butchery & cookery demonstrations very informative & when in the shop found it very hard to keep our wallets in our pockets. Many thanks to all the friendly staff especially the two very nice young ladies who kept us topped up with tea, coffee & wine. Out of interest can you tell me who won the days stalking & what was the final weight of the Roe.”
Thanks again

“Just a quick email to say that i really enjoyed the open day on sat.
A lot of useful info and the butchery demo was very informative. Would of liked to stay longer but there is only a certain amount a 18month old can take being carried around. Can you pass on my thanks to the two young ladies who offered to take my son for a while, little did they know what a little monster he can be.
Just out of interest what was the weight of the roe carcass and who won the stalk?”
Many thanks,
